Finding Your Balance: Understanding Female Hormones & FSH

Women’s hormones are constantly changing. Throughout life—from our first period, through pregnancy, perimenopause and beyond—our bodies are continually adapting. These hormonal shifts influence far more than our reproductive health. They can affect our mood, energy levels, sleep, weight, concentration, skin, digestion and overall wellbeing.
One of the most important hormones to understand is FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone).
Produced by the pituitary gland, FSH plays a key role in regulating the menstrual cycle and stimulating the ovaries. As women approach perimenopause and menopause, FSH levels often begin to rise as the ovaries become less responsive. Measuring FSH can provide valuable insight into where you are on your hormonal journey.
However, hormones never work in isolation.
FSH is just one piece of a much bigger picture that includes oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones and cortisol. Understanding how these work together can help explain symptoms such as:
Brain fog
Hot flushes
Low mood or anxiety
Irregular periods
Poor sleep
Weight changes
Fatigue
Reduced libido
The encouraging news is that knowledge is empowering.
