Diabetes symptoms - How to recognise them

Let’s not sugar coat it…diabetes is serious.

Right now 13.6 million people are at an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes in the UK, and might not even know.

The good news is that with the right support, up to 50% of Type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented or delayed…and that’s where The London house of Wellbeing comes in!

Diabetes Week celebrates the millions of people living with diabetes as well as educating us all about what we can do to help ourselves and each other.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a serious condition where your blood glucose level is too high. It can happen when your body doesn't produce insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or the insulin it produces isn't enough or effective (Type 2 diabetes).

Common symptoms:
  • Going to the toilet frequently, especially at night

  • Being really thirsty

  • Feeling more tired than usual

  • Losing weight without trying to

  • Genital itching or thrush

  • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal

  • Blurred vision

If you have any of these symptoms it’s a good idea to see your GP. If diabetes goes undiagnosed or is not managed well, it can lead to complications such as damage to the eyes, feet, kidney disease, stroke and more.

But remember that many of these side effects can be prevented or delayed through proper management and lifestyle changes, and The London House of Wellbeing is here to help!

We recommend living a happy, healthy life by:

  • Having a balanced diet, paying particular attention to carb content (as recommended by your diabetic nurse)

  • Taking your diabetes medicine as directed by your prescriber

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Stopping smoking

  • Keeping active

  • Taking care of your mental wellbeing

How can we help you?

At the London House of Wellbeing we are all about preventative healthcare. We can carry out health screening tests which indicate whether you have pre-diabetes or other conditions which may put you at a greater risk.

For example:

  • Rapid glucose test

  • HbA1c test

  • Cholesterol test

  • BMI & blood pressure...and lots more!

Our qualified pharmacists are also on hand to answer any questions you may have about diabetes prevention and management, including questions about diabetes medication. Whilst our nutritionists offer free discovery calls to help put you on the right track to perfecting your healthy diet.

Together we can and will get on top of managing diabetes. Get in touch today!
